WHY IS STORYTELLING LIKE SAFE CRACKING?

We've all seen the movies where the cunning cat burglar is trying to open the safe. The tension builds he turns the dial, intensely listening for those tell-tale clicks. Finally he throws open the door and grabs the diamonds with a triumphant smile.

Great storytelling is a lot like this. When telling a story in your sales pitch or networking chats try to notice the moment when something clicks. This is the amazing point when casual listening turns into keen interest.

So how can you help this happen?

  • Ask the right questions so you understand the pain points your listener needs help with. Then drop the story that fits.

  • Do some research into your client or audience before the session so you're ready with the right story.

  • Have a mental 'story library' of your most powerful business stories and practice telling them well.

The big difference between a storyteller and a thief is that we’re trying to give something rather than take something away. The goal is always to help, and the treasure in the ‘safe’ is a happy new client.
