As AI becomes more capable, the case for building your personal brand has never been more urgent.

We're watching AI handle tasks that used to be our differentiators. It writes copy, analyses data, creates strategies, even codes. But here's what it can't do: be you. In an age where technical skills can be automated, your personal identity becomes your most valuable business asset. The solopreneurs who will thrive aren't just good at what they do, they're unmistakably themselves.
This makes the question "what makes you unique?" more critical than ever before. And that's where most of us stumble.
During my Storylab consultations I always ask business owners what makes them unique. The irony is that they often give similar answers to others in their field. It's not that they're not unique in some way, they always are, it's just that they sound the same. It's also because business owners sometimes feel safer giving the generic, expected answer.
Your business does have unique features, it's just a matter of identifying them and describing them with clarity.
Here's a couple of useful insights:
Uniqueness doesn't come from a single thing. It comes from a combination of things, especially an unexpected one. Take a look at your service and then elements of your personality as business owner. What surprising value comes from this combo? For example, my client who installs security systems is also a natural teacher. His great explanations make people safer.
By far the most powerful combination is what you do plus your stories. Two chiropractors may have similar treatments, but one can talk about the unique way they raise the spirits of patients in pain.
So when it comes to differentiating yourself from your competition remember this: your stories can't be replicated because there's only one of you. AI can mimic style, but it can't live your experiences or tell your stories with the authority that comes from having been there.
The next time someone asks what makes you unique, have the right story ready to share. Think about exciting combinations of ideas and work these into your marketing. In the age of AI, your personal brand isn't just an advantage, it's your protection.
